Cancer often develops silently, with symptoms that are easy to dismiss or attribute to other causes. But recognizing early warning signs can be the difference between catching cancer at a curable stage versus an advanced one.
The 10 Warning Signs
- Unexplained weight loss — Losing more than 10 pounds without trying can be a sign of several cancers including pancreatic, stomach, or lung cancer.
- Persistent fatigue — Not the kind that goes away with rest. Extreme tiredness that doesn't improve can signal leukemia or colon cancer.
- Unusual lumps — Any new lump, especially in the breast, testicles, or lymph nodes, should be evaluated promptly.
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits — Persistent constipation, diarrhea, or blood in stool can indicate colorectal cancer.
- Persistent cough or hoarseness — A cough that lasts more than 3 weeks, especially with blood, warrants investigation for lung cancer.
- Skin changes — New moles, changes in existing moles, or non-healing sores need a skin check.
- Difficulty swallowing — This could be a sign of esophageal or throat cancer.
- Abnormal bleeding — Bleeding outside of normal menstruation, from the rectum, or in urine should be investigated.
- Persistent pain — Chronic pain without obvious cause — in bones, back, or head — needs evaluation.
- Mouth changes — White patches, sores, or bleeding in the mouth may signal oral cancer.
Remember: having one of these symptoms does not mean you have cancer. However, any symptom that is persistent, unusual for you, or progressively worsening should prompt a visit to an oncologist.
